Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods Review

The story begins with the awakening of Bills, alias the god of destruction, after 39 years of sleep. It resembles a purple cat whose power exceeds the understanding. Bills has heard about a super saiyan god and is going to meet Son Goku and Vegeta in order to have more information on this legend.

The story is generally rather well inscribed in the plot of Dragon Ball and is located a few years after the fight of Boo. We learn that Kaioh of the North and Vegeta have known this Bills for a long time, since the father of Vegeta and Frieza were in contact with him about forty years ago.

The movie proposes some returns to the past at the time of the Saiyans and during the fight between Goku and Frieza. The scene of the first transformation of Goku into super saiyan is for example redesigned.

The Dragon Ball GT part is completely eclipsed, since Dragon Ball GT does not mention at any time the presence of a super saiyan god. A by this, there is not really inconsistency with regard to history and it is a good point.

The only minor concern concerns the design of certain characters: Goten, Trunks, Videl and Krilin. The two children, Trunks and Goten have not grown a bit despite the fact that the story goes a few years after the fight against Boo. As for Krilin and Videl they seem rejuvenated, all the more so for Krilin who seems to be ten years old when he must be in his forties. Nothing very nasty but Toriyama was not to be inspired when he redesigned some of these characters ...

From the beginning of the film one feels the humor take a large place in the unfolding of events. Bills, the most powerful being in the universe, is depicted with derision, yet he terrifies all the kaiohs and even the dragon Shenron who has always been right in his sneakers (or rather straight in his balls, Has no feet ...). Bills's character, however, does not seem so bad and even appears as a sympathetic and intelligent character.

We are far from a personality like Freezer or Cell, who had more ideas of dictators. Much of the film happens at the Capsule Corporation for the 38-year-old Bulma. For the occasion, the whole band was invited. When we talk about birthday we think about party, and that says party says relaxation and humor. Especially since Pilaf and his sidekicks are on the scene to steal the dragonballs (the acolytes have become children following a mistake made by the dragon when they wanted to become young). In all his appearances, Pilaf has always been ridiculed, and the film respects this point. Poor Pilaf is now ruined but still wants to control the world.

For this reason he slips discreetly at Bulma in order to steal the gifts of the lottery organized for the anniversary. Obviously the three acolytes will miss their attempted burglary by falling on the Z-team. This part drags a little in length and lasts well a dozen minutes in totality. Even though Pilaf is the first true enemy of Son Goku, he does not deserve such special emphasis. Especially since some emblematic characters of the manga are more or less neglected as Kame sennin , Piccolo or Krilin.

The humor is very nice, but what we like in Dragon Ball Z are the scenes of dramatic fighting. On this point, it can not be said that the film is a model. We are far from the OAV "Broly the Great Warrior" to give only one example. Remember in this movie, the enormous power of Broly brings out a feeling of despair among our heroes. In Battle of God, and despite the titanic power of Bills, the feeling is quite different. The god of destruction is far above anything that has been seen in the past.

Goku in super saiyan 3 did not hold 2 minutes in front of him in the first few minutes of the film. In this fight, Kaioh of the North left half of his planet there. Besides, we learn that at the outset the planet of Kaioh was much larger.

Bills destroyed almost the whole of the star under the effect of anger following part of hide-and-seek that it lost. Gohan, who must be at least as strong as his father thanks to the powers he acquired during the fight against Boo, did not hold more than 30 seconds. As for Vegeta, he fought hard but did not do better than Goku.

For information, the prince of the Saiyans, despite his intensive training (he prefers to train in the hall of gravity instead of going to his wife's birthday) has still not reached stage three of the super saiyan.

To defeat the god of destruction, the only way for Goku is to transform into super saiyen god. Shenron called by the dragonballs explains the origin of the super saiyen god and how to achieve this transformation: it takes the presence of five saiyens with pure heart to allow a sixth saiyen to become a god.

This is good because the five necessary saiyens are present. Vegeta, Gohan, Goten and Trunks are the first four. The last Saiyen is the future child of Gohan and Videl (we learn a few minutes earlier that she is expecting a baby). It's a bit far-fetched but why not. On the other hand, one can cast doubt on the pure heart of Vegeta with all the atrocities that it was able to realize in the past. We do not become an angel even if we decided to go straight ... It took two attempts for Goku to succeed in becoming the super saiyen god.

One could have hoped for an unforgettable transformation, as was the case during the first transformation of Gohan into Super Saian.2 This is not the case. The scene does not provoke any particular emotion.

There is no rage during this metamorphosis, everything seems too easy for Goku. One could also expect that the appearance of Goku changes radically, but it simply returns under its normal appearance with red hair and eyes instead. The shape of the super saiyen god is ultimately very simple.

The aura of Goku can no longer be felt by others, and it is a peculiarity that characterizes the gods. Some may be disappointed and would have preferred something more impressive. Others will think that it is not illogical to go back to something simpler in "god" mode. It is above all a story of taste.

The fight between Goku and Bills lasts a few minutes. Goku will even lose his "god" mode during the confrontation without necessarily losing his powers. The god of destruction reminds him that he has in part kept the power of the super saiyen god while being in the form of a super simple saiyen. During the battle, the two opponents find themselves in space.

Goku never had the ability to survive in space despite his strength so one can assume that his recent god powers allow him to survive in such a hostile environment. The most surprising is the final course which is not usual in a DBZ film.

We have always been accustomed to the hero finding unexpected resources to defeat his enemy. In "Battle of Gods" Goku loses his fight after spending all his energy to protect the Earth. Bills also no longer has enough energy to destroy the planet but still looks cooler than Son Goku (he did not use 100% of his abilities).

He decides to leave Earth for the moment. The end opens the door to a potential sequel especially that Whis, the master of Bills is supposed to be even stronger and that there are twelve universes with so many different gods.
